Healthcare Facilities in Mizoram

The beautiful state of Mizoram is equipped with many health facilities and medical services for the people. These medical facilities are equipped with the modern health technology equipment and tools to provide advanced medical emergency treatment. Being a developing state, the government of Mizoram is trying to give as much facilities as possible to the residents of Mizoram.

There are many hospitals, health centers, clinics and health facilities across the state of Mizoram. These medical facilities provide treatment both to the local patients and other patients from neighboring places as well.

Healthcare Facilities in Mizoram


The health department in Mizoram is hard to track due to lack of documents. However available records show that it was in the year 1894 that a camp was started in Mizoram for the treatment of the ill and sick people. Later on in the year 1896 it was upgraded to dispensary.

The health department of Mizoram is divided into two departments namely Directorate of Health Services (DHS) and Directorate of Hospital and Medical Education (DHME). The health departments have formed many health institutions like Community Health Centtre (CHC), Primary Health Centres (PHC), Sub Centres (CS), and Eural Hospitals.

The hospitals are equipped with latest technologies and the health department has kept many experienced health specialists. To ensure the health of the citizens the health department has issued various health schemes.

Health Schemes of Mizoram Government:

Damlo harsa tanpuina (SIAF):

The Mizoram State Illness Assistance Fund provides assistance to people of the state with certain illness and unable to afford the expenses of its cure. It has been providing assistance since the year 1997. The fund is registered under the Societies Regulation Act, 1860. The diseases which come under this scheme are certain life threatening diseases.

Natna khirh zual(Grant-in-aid):

This scheme states that the government would provide financial assistance to those who are not employed by the government, public sector undertaking or other local bodies and whose family income does not exceed more than rs. 2000. This scheme can be availed by scheduled caste and schedule tribes suffering from fell diseases such as Chronic, debilating illness such as Tuberculosis, Cancer, Leprosy, Chronic Heart Disease, Chronic Lung Disease, Monoplague, Homoplague, Quadriplague, Paraplague, Mental Cases, Amputae (excluding fingers and toes).

Mipa/Hmeichhe insiam (Sterilization):

This is a National Family Planning Programme launched in the year 1952 that emphasise on fertility regulation in order to stabilize the population of India. India is the first country to launch this type of a scheme for its people. According to the scheme, the government offers compensation to people who undergo the sterility process. Women undergoing tubectomy gets Rs. 600 and men undergoing Vasectomy gets Rs. 1100 in the government hospitals.

Nau Nei Tanpuina (JSY):

This is another scheme which promotes the institutional delivery of children in health units providing an amount of Rs. 700 to rural mothers and Rs.600 to urban mothers. A lot of women has benefitted from this scheme.

Janani- Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK):

Launched on the 4th of August 2012, this scheme was an initiative of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Government of India. It emphasizes on the elimination of the expenses of both the pregnant women and sick neonates up to 30 days after birth in Government health institutions both rural and urban areas.

There are 11 district hospitals, 12 community health centres, 57 primary health centres, 370 sub-centres and 78 clinics established in Mizoram.

Civil Hospital in Aizawl which was founded as a Coolie Dispensary in India during the British in 1896, developed into a hospital in 1906. The hospital which initally had 12 beds now has a strength of 300 beds as more and more people migrate from rural Mizoram to Aizawl for jobs and business. The major facilities include: Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Medicines, ENT, Gynaecology, Bacteriology, Pediatrics, Dermatology, Radiology,  Pathology,  and Biochemistry.

The Presbyterian Hospital which began with just one doctor and six beds in 1928 is now a full-feldged hospital with more than 23 doctors and 300 beds. It has 3 outreach centres namely:  Dr. Fraser’s Clinic, for out-door patients, Grace Inn a centre for persons with substances abuse problems and Millennium Centre, a shopping centre for out-door patients.
